I’ve been looking at a lot of old videos and photos lately and came across these pics of a little family play session we had a while back. I know kinetic sand has been around for a while now and lots of people have even figured out how to make it themselves, but we’re old fashioned I guess, and still buy it at the store. We also still play with it. A lot. Especially during the witching hour.

My husband, who is undercover the most creative person I know, came up with this great little self portrait activity that we all love. It’s super easy and fun and all you need is some kinetic sand and a tray.
They have kinetic sand on amazon. Click the link and it can be at your doorstep tomorrow. Go Prime.
Basically, the “activity” is to look in the mirror and try to make your face out of kinetic sand on the tray. This one is my husband. Didn’t he do a good job? He actually skipped the mirror and went freestyle but if you have little kids they usually like checking themselves out in the mirror. Depending what age they are, you can do it together. You can also have someone make a face out of the sand and everyone has to guess who it is. That’s fun because even the little ones can play along.
Regardless of who it is, everyone gets to mash the face at the end, which is definitely a highlight.
I don’t have directions for how to make a face because that sounds really hard to explain. Just try different shapes and pushes and pinches and see how it goes.
If you haven’t tried kinetic sand with your kids yet, I highly highly recommend it. This stuff has saved me while getting dinner ready many a times. Just put some on a tray with a scooper, spoon, plastic knife, scissor, little figures, anything your kid is into and let them play. The sensory experience is incredible. The sand is sort of alive and moves in an incredible way in your hands, plus there is no sandy residue and it’s super easy to pick up if it falls on the floor. You just take a handful of it to wipe the sand that fell and it will adhere to the sand in your hand. It’s really cool. When you first touch you’re like, woah, this is amazing.
They have it in all different colors
now and I have yet to meet a child that doesn’t love it. If you live by a Michaels store, they usually have it on sale for 12-14.
